Ik had het geluk een opgroeiende tiener te zijn in de tijd dat ‘Songs in the key of life‘ van Stevie Wonder uitkwam. Er ging een wereld voor me open; een opwindende wereld vol schoonheid, rijkdom en vreugde! Nog altijd valt bovendien de invloed en betekenis van dit album voor de loop van de muziekgeschiedenis niet te overschatten.
De liedjes van ‘Songs in the key of life’ hebben mij muzikaal gevormd. Daarbij komt dat ik ook innerlijk beïnvloed ben door veel van deze liedjes. Één zo’n ‘sleutel-liedje’ is voor mij het poëtische ‘If it’s magic’.

Een magische, spirituele song. Telkens als ik dit hoor ben ik betoverd door de schoonheid en diepte ervan. Ik ben al vanaf de eerste keer dat ik het hoorde gefascineerd door de ‘It’ in dit liedje: “if It’s magic….then why..?”
Dit liedje verwoordt een levensvraag die ik vanaf mijn kindertijd al bij me draag: Als ‘Het’ (leven?) zo’n kostbaar wonder is, van zo’n onschatbare waarde, waarom kunnen wij mensen er dan niet behoedzaam en liefdevol mee omgaan? Ik heb nog steeds geen antwoord gekregen…
